Default Engine Support Bar for oil pan R&R?

Howdy Gang-

I've got a Gen 6 502 ZZ BBC stuffed in my '69 and during my heads/cam upgrade I got my **** kicked by the timing cover lower half moon gasket (broke the factory cover plate the had integral gasket and new aluminum cover came without so I cut a half moon out of a 1 piece and went for it....time to replace the whole oil pan gasket after a year of a small leak!). I'm going to replace the rear main seal while I'm at it.

Question is has anybody used the HF Engine Support Bar to lift the motor up enough to allow the oil pan to be removed after dropping the tranny? Not sure the hood channels can support the weight (alum heads :-) or if I need to make some sort of support for the engine support to distribute the weight.

Don't want to jerk the motor as hoods and I have a love/hate relationship when it comes to removal/installation. I'd rater walk across Texas barefoot in the summer.

Thanks !

Since Gen 6 design, check rear main seal design because if it is a one-piece type, then trans has to come out with flywheel.
Otherwise, if a two-piece design, then why not jack up engine from frame mounts and place blocks of wood, or similar devices, between engine isolators and frame mounts?

As of the Gen 5 design, the engine has a one piece rear main seal. As Everett stated, you're not going to be able to change the seal without removing the transmission.

Thanks Gents. I believe I'm going to leave the tranny in (strapped) and pull the engine out. At least that way I can clean it up along with the firewall while tending to the oil pan gasket and rear main seal. 4 hrs of dissy for 30 min of R&R...by chance does anybody know what 'book time' for this would run? I've seen 8 hrs but not sure. Gotta beat it.

Left the trans in and separated it at the flywheel and got 'er done. Skosh clearance over the forward cowl as car was on a 4 post lift and needed it to be high enough to allow hoist legs to slide in beneath it. We all went to bed with the same amount of fingers that we woke up with so all good!
