Distributor Recommendation for 68 Camaro 396
Seems official. My stock HEI MSD ignition went kaput. It was an MSD Super HEI 8364. Apparently MSD doesn't want to have anything to do with this anymore. I went through the system and discovered that the pick up coil's resistance was way off. Should have read infinity; instead it was reading somewhere in the 8m ohms. Given there are no replacement parts, looks like I'm in the market for a whole new distributor.
What have you put on your similar car? Any problems? Just looking for recommendation.
I'm not sure if I have enough room on the firewall for an ignition box, so I was looking at the MSD Ready-To-Run distributors. Good idea? Bad idea?
Hit me up. Let me know your experience. I certainly don't want to make a dumb choice. 😁
Thanks all!

Two choices for reliability:
1. Install original and/or rebuilt point set distributor with cloth-covered wire for power (never seen one of these go bad)
2. Install a GM HEI dist and get an extra module for the glovebox with screwdriver for replacement on the road, if module fails.
Coil resistance should be some ohmic value. A coil is a continuous length of wire.
I would not want it to read infinity indicating an open.
GM HEI pick-up coils are 1200-1500 ohms.

I have several different setups on my three Chevy powered cars. On one I have a Mallory Unilite along with an MSD 6AL box. On the other I have a Pertronix distributor kit in a stock Chevy points style distributor, and also a MSD 6AL box. On the third I have a stock GM HEI distributor. They all work great, and I have no preference, except I do like the MSD 6AL boxes.
If firewall space is an issue, then install the MSD box on the inside of the car. It's better there anyway, as less heat to kill them. MSD sells wiring harness extensions, or just make up longer leads.
