Decoding part numbers need help please
My tranny has stamped on it
GM 397864
The differential only has stamped
811K
Trying to find out what year drivetrain parts the previous owner put in this camaro, which originallywas a v6.
Any help at all would really be appreciated.

RE: Decoding part numbers need help please
I just did a search of known decode sites. The best bet would be to go there and look at the pictures/diagrams and compare those oto your tranny. I fear there may not be alot of info over the net about these things.
I just did a google search for gm tranny's by casting number.

I dont know why they did it but they did. there were 16k V6's in 69 alone.

Sorry, to the best of my knowledge GM did not manufacture any V-6 engines in any of their divisions until much later than '69. All original 6 cylinder engines in the first gen. Camaros were inline sixes.

Actually GM was the first American auto maker to manufacture and install V-6’s in some of their vehicles. GMC trucks used then as far back as 1960. Buick used them from 1962 to 1971. My nephew has a 1966 Buick Skylark with an original V-6. They were never factory installed in first generation Camaros. Check out the following link:

Clyde, thanks for the correction. I was thinking '6 cyl' and put V6. It was RPO - L22 a 250ci 155hp 'Turbo-Thrift' 6-Cyl. Available in 1st Gens, the second gen had a 6-cyl but I can not find any further descriptions for them.
