Hey guys,
I was reading another thread and it hit me, just how much room is under the 2" cowl hood? I have a small block and going to be running the Performer RPM (non air gap) intake with a 2" spacer and holley or edelbrock carb. Am I going to have a clearance problem?

 

If OE steel hood, hole should natch air cleaner location.
If aftermarket fiberglass, same applies but they do not have structure form like a steel hood.


Best method to use for height verification,
Roll clay into a 2 inch diameter column by min 6 inches long and place on top of fuel bowl with out air cleaner and air cleaner stud.
Slowly close hood to full latch, then open and measure crushed height.
You might need a low profile cleaner.

 

It is a steel hood. Probably an AMD at the local speed shop. Very nice (new) condition. I'm going to pick it up anyway, but was just wondering. I'll have to do that (clay thing) once I get the car back together. Motor in I mean.


Oh, and I already have a low profile air cleaner. I was going to try and buy either a much thicker filter or double up on them, but now I'll have to wait.

Whatever you do, remove the stud from the carb.
I can't count how many times others did not remove the stud, then they have a 'star' in the hood.


Yes, a taller and larger air cleaner will help two ways,
1. Filter air better as the volume of air moving through the filter element is slower,
2. Same goes for volume of air into air horn is less restricted - less of a bend.

HA, I bet. I've seen a LOT of stars coming from INSIDE the hoods. I guess if I forget ... then I'll have to pick up a tunnel ram and cut a hole in the hood. LOL.

K & N has quite a variety of air filters that might fit your application.If you worry about airflow in atight space.One of the X-treme air-filter set ups might work.Good luck to you.

Good point ... I've seen some nice ones. If I can't just get the filter I want for my air cleaner, then I'll just have to look at those X-treme ones. Those are the ones with the "filter" tops? Looks good too.

 

Should be no problem,I ran an Edlebrock "twisted" Torker with a 750 Holley double pumper and an aircleaner on top of a 427 big block with a steel cowl hood on my '69. Wasn't a big aircleaner but also wasn't a low profile. I'm sure it was taller than a Performer RPM on a small block,probably even with the spacer. The stock flat hood wouldn't shut over it with just the carb and ac stud removed. Carb is on an angle too.
Not mine but pretty much exactly what I had.

 

Ah, right on. I'm guessing there is quite a lot of room to run a taller air cleaner. I've seen some good ones on a few, but of course never enough for what ya think you're going to run. My low pro air cleaner is also a long one (like a dual quad, but for a single) so I may just have to change the whole thing to make is all work. No biggie.
The hood at the local speed shop has some damage to it. Along the edges and were bulging out. Not quite sure how to repair that, but they wouldn't except my "offer" on the hood so I spent $350 on other things I need to get the job done.
