It's difficult and dangerous, but it can be done.
Take the motor mount bolts out, hoist up the engine and don't destroy the distributor against the firewall. You should only need to raise it a few inches to get the pan out. The pan should come straight down and then back. Be sure to use some safety such as wooden blocks under the motor mounts and blocks under the tires, etc.

You might want to disconnect the linkage, but the mount should move enough for you.

Ok, guys thanks for all the help. It was straight forward, I unmounted fan shroud and distributer cap. That was all under the hood. Next I un bolted motor mounts, loosened tranny mount. Then unmounted starter. Jacked up with floor jack with wood to ditribute force and not bend pan. used 2 small pieces of 1x2 in the motor mount and let it down. un bolted pan and it droped right out.
The bad news is that Its a 2 bolt main block. And now I think Im just frustrated enough to build a new engine. Im tired of chasing my tail with this thing, and now it will never be what I want. So I think a bbc stroker is in my future. I think also a tremec 6 speed and 12 bolt or 9 inch rear.
If anyone knows where I can pick up any of the drive train parts it would be great.
