Default car dies w battery disconnected

I recently rewired my 68 camaro from headlamps to brakes, My alternator doesnt seem to be putting out any charge voltage, i bought a new voltage regulator, but i didnt hook up the 4th position on the voltage regulator, my car starts but if i pull of either side of the battery car dies. i cant find a simple diagram anywhere, really dont want to rewire,

I take it you are using an externally regulated alternator?

Yes, he is. The external VR has a terminal from underneath coming out and by OE design, a noise cap goes there as the cap case/clamp get screwed to VR chassis.
He unfortunately wired this terminal to ground and it grounded the Field voltage going to alt thus no alt output.
