Body Sealer?

Body Sealer?
I am doing a lot of interior work right now on my 68 and I have not been able to find the type of sealer used throughout the interior between and around all mating body panels. It appears to be a tar based substance that will break off with mild pressure if it no longer is adhering to the metal. But otherwise appears to be in good condition on the car given it's 40 year age. I know someone has had to replace this substance with something if they have ever had their chassis chemically dipped. My question is simple.
1. What is it?
2. What is a modern commercially available equivalent/replacement?

Any body supply store should have seam sealer. Eastwood will have it also. Modern seam sealers are 10 times better the ones that where around in the 60's.

Seam Sealer
I use 3M Fast N Firm seam sealer in my restoration business. It doesn't have the same look as the black tar appearance that you are talking about but is a very good sealer. I don't know of anybody that is making the factory stuff but it wasn't very good anyway. It chipped and flaked off.
