Best Automatic trans for 496 Big Block
What's the best automatic transmission to put behind a 496 built for cruising and some highway driving in a 67 Camaro. We were going to go a TH400 with a gear vendor, but now I am being told that that would be too hard on the 400 from the transmission experts. We want a transmission with or without electronics. Car will seldom see the drag strip, but more of a cruiser and highway driving at times. How about the 4L80e? I was also looking at the Hughes Performance Transmissions. Any advice? Gonna go with a Currie Ford 9 inch rear end with about 350 (range) gears.

TH400's are very strong. The one in my car just has a 34 element sprag, RVMVB, and good friction materials, other than that it's stock and my car runs deep in the 9's. Put good friction materials in your TH400 along with about a 2,500 stall and a good transmission cooler with the Gear Vendor OD. I'm assuming your 496 is fairly tame. If you have a cam that is 245+ duration @0.50" you will probably need a looser converter.
