Default Anyone else getting surface rust under Trunk mat from moisture.

I live in Houston and sometimes when the cool weather hits we get some crazy moisture in the air. I was in the trunk the other day and noticed a little surface rust and pulled the mat out and it was trapping moisture and I have a little surface rust on the splatter paint.

What should I do? I will clean up surface and repaint trunck splatter, but the bigger issue is how to eliminate this problem? Should I just leave matt out? It looks nice in there and would like to keep it... ?

How are ya'll dealing with this issue?

First step is take out the mat, wipe up the moisture, and let floor dry.
Second step, after drying, take a garden hose and flood the rear window, tailights, radio antenna, if equipped, and trunk lid. Then open trunk lid and check floor of rmoisture.
Third step, if moisture found, look up from the drippings to find the leaking area.
Fourth step, fix the leaking area.

And yes, the mats were pulled from the floor allowing the condensation to evaporate.

So you're saying it's not due to rain? The reason then would be because the floor mats don't "breathe" because they're a solid vinyl. So any moisture in the air can trap between the mat and metal. Given your weather conditions, I'd leave the mat out until you show the car, if you do.
Oh, and cars like ours....give it a sponge bath. A garden hose soaking is as good (or bad) as leaving it out in the rain.

Yea, the Car never sees Rain, and ussually is covered in garage so only a couple of water baths a year, rest of the time she is just detail sprayed and wiped down.

I think the Houston Humidity may be too much for a vinyl trunk mat, I will probubly just clean up surface and touch up paint and leave mat out! unless showing the car!

Thanks

I live in a very humid area too. The smooth concrete floor in the garage would sweat alot in certain weather conditions, as well as the underside of the cars. My solution was to put an oscillating fan on the floor in front of the cars, always running. I have seen NO sweat on the floor or undersides since. It's been about 6 or seven years. Not sure if that will help condensation under the mat, but it can't hurt.

I agree with the fan, even tho here in sc its pretty dry I still get a lot of condensation in my garage. I have a box fan that I've mounted up in the corner and it keeps everything good and dry (and helps keep me cool in the summer ).

You might want to go with a thin carpet in the trunk.
It's much more breathable.
