Which alternator do I have? Please help.
Hi, I do know a lot about cars but I don't know much about alternators. I have a 1969 camaro with a 454 in it (obviously not the original engine) . I'm updating the stereo system so I am looking to purchase a 100 amp chrome alternator. What I need to know is which alternator do I have? One wire or Three wire? This is not my car but this is what my alternator looks like:

Maybe I dont understand. You have an alternator that looks like that, and it has some wires, and yours has some wires, but you want to know how many wires does yours have. If its infront of you I would say start by counting them. If its not I would say wait till it is, then count them. I know I sound like a smart a$$ but, like I said, maybe I dont understand the question. Looks like there is 4 on the pic above, a big red one a yellow, red and black one. What kind of alt do you need, besides 100A. You really only need one with 3 wires, one from the battery, one from the ignition and one from the fuse box.
confusing question to say the least
simple answer is to count the wires going into your alt. if it only has 1 then you have a single wire alt, if it has more then it doesn't
not trying to sound like a smartass either but there is no other way to answer your question

The picture shows a 3 wire internally regulated 10 SI Alternator. They range from 37 to 63 amp rating. This can be modified to to a single wire by changing the regulator kit if you want a single wire.
