Default 69 Front wheel size confusion

I’m curious and a bit confused about front wheel size on a 69. I have read many postings talking about people running 8” wide rims on both 17s and 18s using ~4.75 backspace without rubbing. I’m building a 69 SS/RS with a 396. I have 2” drop coil springs in the front and 2” drop leafs in the back. I just finished install of Wilwood 12.2” disc brakes all around. I have been considering 18s all around, but realize every car is a little different, so I bought a Wheelrite measurement tool to check for clearance. The back showed what I expected with room for an 18x9.5 with 5.25 backspace. The front is what surprised me. Right now it looks like a 17x7 with 4” backspace is the most I can fit. Anything larger or with more backspace will contact the front subframe at full turn radius. Are others seeing this same thing? Further concerning is that I don’t yet have front wheel wells and fenders so I may have even more clearance problems. Hopefully front end sheet metal will arrive soon so I can verify. I would like to get some wheels and tires and get this thing on the ground!
