Default 69 8 Track

8 Track not working on my 69. Trying to simply get rid of it. It was somehow attached to my center console cover. After an hour or two, I managed to get it off. Pain in the ***!

There were 3 harness connections. I unhooked all of them, got the 8 track out of the car and...WOW...looks SO much better!

Now my AM radio won't work!!! Somehow, the power to the radio was run through one of the harnesses connected to the 8 track! Anyone know how I can get power back to the radio without hooking the 8 track back up?

P.S. 69 8 track for sale or swap for 69 AM/FM radio!!!

Thanks

turn key on to Accessary and probe the wires that went to your 8 track for which one is +12v and trace that wire from that connector that feeds your radio and use that

Damn, I wish I was that smart. Without reconnecting the 8 track, not sure how to do that. But...if I can find the 12v, how do I re-route the power back ?
THANK you for responding!

I have no idea what wire on your radio is the +12v. If it is a stock radio and the 8 track was stock (didn't know you could get one stock) than there would be a wiring diagram in the Factory Assembly Manual.

If your radio and the 8 track were aftermarket it could be anything. A stereo install shop could figure it out though

My suggestion was to turn the key on to the left which is accessory position so the wire harness would be powered and then just probe the 8 track connector with a volt meter to see which one showed 12v. Then connect that wire to the + wire on your radio

Not sure why the radio would be powered from 8 track but if that is the way it came stock maybe.

This site has the FSM you can view or download to see a wiring schematic if you can understand that stuff

Thanks for responding. Believe it or not, it's a factory installed 8 track. Waiting for my shop manual to see if any of the harnesses/connections are covered. With three harnesses connecting the 8 track to the car (under the console), I suspect that a lot of the wiring is related to the speakers which may be another cause of the radio not working when I unhooked the 8 track harnesses.

Hi, Guys. Made some progress but can't quite get my AM radio to work after unplugging the 8 track. Seems that I do OK until I get to the 3 prong connector coming from the 8 track. Once disconnected, the radio loses power. Can't seem to figure out how to get power back to the radio without reconnecting this plug back into the 8 track. No place to hook it into the radio as the radio has only one plug into it.

If anyone is still following this thread, I'd appreciate your help!!! Some pics attached. Thanks

The 1969 Assembly Manual has some information on the console tape deck, but it doesn't get into detail about the power supply and I couldn't find a schematic that shows the radio. Hopefully, maybe these drawings will help.

Thx to all! By design, the radio got its power FROM the 8 track so that the radio would turn itself off when a tape was inserted. There was a connector between the two to facilitate the power.

By jumping two wires on the radio’s end of the connector, the power was able to re-route itself and make a u-turn back to the radio!

Thx again to everyone for helping. Hope that this thread will help others in similar situations!
