68 Camaro Tic Toc Tach Question/Parts
All,
The original tic toc tach in my 68 needed a restoration as it was inaccurate all the time. I sent it out to one of the best the "Tachman" for restoration. The Tachman called me with some bad news in his 30+ years of tach restorations this is only the 3rd tac he has come across where the jewel was worn out. He explained that rather than using a metal bushing to support the needle the manufacturer used a machined gem stone (jewel) which, back then, was more precise and tended to last longer. Luck of the Irish some might call it never the less, this jewel is no longer made and it is labor intensive to repair. I'd like to keep the original tach with the car but I am not having much luck finding a spare parts tic toc tach out there do you know of one for cheap? If I cannot come across this jewel I might reserve to buying an OER replacement tach but that is my last resort. Have any of you had good luck with the quality of the OER tachs/instrumentation? My car has a 327, the tac redline is 5000 or 5500rpm but I don't care about the quality of face plate if you know of a parts tach I only need the jewel.
Thanks
Dan
