Default 68 camaro fuel gauge issue

I am having a frustrating issue with my fuel gauge...not the gauge itself, I don't think....but probably the sending unit. It started acting up a little then pegged way past the full reading and doesn't budge. I did some testing....I unplugged the wires in the trunk and turned on the ignition and it still read past full. I then grounded the sending wire back to the gauge and it swung just past empty. As I am to understand it, the readings of these two tests mean the gauge and the wiring to the gauge are OK. I checked the ground wire from the sender to its ground and it wasn't great. The wire itself was pretty beat up so I replaced what I could and found a cleaner ground, but it didn't fix the problem. I then used a meter to check ohms in the sending wire and it was at 2.9. I believe that means the tank is almost empty, which it is not. I got a rubber house and fished it in to the tank to move the gas around thinking that would move he float and change the ohms, but it didn't do anything. One thing to note....the gas gauge has never read correctly. I typically get to Empty on the gauge with about 4 gallons or so left in the tank.

Seems like everything is pointing to a bad sender....I am just looking for some other opinions before I pull the tank. Thank you in advance for your help!

Start tracing from the gauge to the sender .And make it all right then if all else falls then pull the tank.

You can get a rheostat/potentiometer, 0-100 ohms would be good, or a 50 ohm resistor, and plug into wire from trunk floor going to harness, and see if gauge works.
One lead to tan wire, other lead to ground - there is a ground screw below trunk latch.
Also, check resistance into tan wire to tank reading sending unit resistance.
Both methods will determine faulty item.

thanks.....I ran these tests and it seems to be pointing to the sender. The tests showed the gauge and the harness to be OK. I ordered a new sender, so we will see what it does. The gauge never read correctly, so I figured a sender was in my future at some point!
