Factory spec'd at 290hp, but widely believed to be much more.

Yeah, that's what Chevy was claiming. But they have been known to "spoof" a tad on the numbers before, like on the L88 Vette engine, etc.

I watched a show one time where they took motors built with all factory parts and tweaked by engine builders. They then went right on a Dyno. The 302 pulled just shy of 400 HP. Sorry I am not sure what it would make right off the assembly line. I am old enough to remember the SS350 4 speed had no chance against a 302 even tho it was rate 5 HP more.

Chevrolet rated the DZ302 at 290hp to keep it under the 300hp mark that increased insurance rates a lot back then. The truth is, they didn't lie because that amount was correctly measured at the mid 5000rpm range. What they didn't publicize was that the unique engine was made to scream like a road course race car and produced over 350hp at the low 6000rpm range. If the clutch could handle it, racers where taking these motors deep into the redline and pumping closer to 400hp. I wouldn't recommend that but that is what the DZ302's were all about! Quite an engine I must say. I love mine!

As mentioned they were rated 290HP, but I remember Car Craft or Hot Rod magazine taking an engine from a 1969 Z/28 and bolting it to a engine dyno, where it made nearly 390HP with cast iron exhaust manifolds!
Imagine what a good exhaust system, and some tuning would have produced?
