Default 350 dipstick length

I have just changed oil in a "new to me" 69 Camaro with a 350. The oil only comes up about 3/8 of an inch on the dipstick after putting in 5 qts. of oil. What is the length of a stock 350 dipstick? I am thinking the dipstick is too short. Thanks in advance

I'd have to measure mine, but I'm at work. In the meantime, take a look at your oil pan. Does it look like a stock pan, or do you have an oversize extra capacity one (what I suspect)? If you don't know the difference by looking at it, then take a picture for show & tell.

Aftermarket or OE dipstick with its proper OE tube?
As Senior Mod suggested, pan shape has a lot to do with quantity of oil.
If wide expanded sides and an OE stick with OE tube, then more oil will be needed.
Add a qt at a time and check stick.
Most widened pans take 8 qts.

Many of the aftermarket chrome dipstick assemblies come with a tube that needs to be trimmed to length. My buddy just went through this when he got a new one, and the oil barely touched the dipstick. Simply measure difference between where it is, and where you want it to be, and trim that amount off the top of the tube.

^ This is assuming you know with certainty that the oil is at the level it's supposed to be.
If working with a larger capacity oil pan, doing that would be shooting in the dark.
