Default 1st Gen problems. Chime in!

Ok fella's I got my 67 camaro delivered and have had a bit of time to go through it and found some problems that I want to try and get resolved so I can get this thing more streetable. I took as many pics as possible and if anyone needs anymore just let me know.

The first problem I came across is the passenger side rear sits quite a bit lower and sticks out further then the driver side and any time I juice the throttle or have a passenger in the car the tire rubs the fender real bad and smokes the tire (Rear tire sizes are 275/60/R15). The car has mono leaf springs and I was looking into going with a dual or something else.... Pictures :

Also while servicing the starter on the car today I noticed something stuck in the driver side front spring. Dont know what or why its there.

Only other things I noticed is when I touch the brakes the steering wheel rips very very hard left and trys to lock up, the fronts are drum brakes.

If anyone has any input at all then please feel free the chime in and help me get this bad boy driving like it looks

Thanks!

First of all about the tires sticking out farther on one side than the other. I would find a center point on the rear end and measure each side to the body and compare measurements. Alot of people swap out the rear ends, and they might have botched the job.
The thing stuck in the front spring is probably to stiffen it. Used to see it done years back.
Also check to see if car has been lowered. If it has stiffen up your suspension if its stock and you should be fine.

OK John...The things in the front springs are called lift kits. You can install and remove them with a standard 1/2 in. ratchet and extension. When you remove them, the front end will drop some. The reason that they are there is probably because the springs need to be replaced from age fatigue. The brakes pulling can be for various reasons. The most likely is a leaking wheel cylinder is soaking the brake shoes and causing one side to not grab.. Pull the drums and inspect the brakes. Replace or rebuild leaking wheel cylinders, clean brake components and drums ( with aerosol Brakekleen, you buy at parts store), adjust and make sure all parts move freely and reassemble. If the drums braking surface is gouged or scraped replace worn brake shoes and have the drums machined (if possible) or replaced. As far as the rear axle, you need to raise the car up and un-bolt the rear shackles to let the axle drop down. Re-center and alignthe axle on the spring perches and put back in place. If that doesn't do it, then the car may have been in some kind of accident and the springs or mounts are bent.

It probably would be best if you just relaced all four springs and shocks. The car will sit and handle a lot better if you do.

I agree to replace all your springs and measure off of the rear end to see if it is even. while you are under there, you might be able to see, by eye, where they butchered the rearend

otherwise, car looks good in the pics

Hi
Here is my take on the rear end, first gens have spring perches welded to the axle tubes that locate them. It is not likely that your rear is located off center unless there is some kind of problem with the front or back spring mounts, -again very unlikely.

I would remove the back tires and rims, measure from the center or edge of the spring perch on the axle tube to the brake backing plate, they should measure the same on both sides, if not I would suspect its some axle other than stock. One with an offset center section or something.

The other possibility and the most lilely IMO is that the rear rims have two different backspacings or offsets.
While you have the tires and rims off, measure from the back face of the rim to the inside edge, they should be same on both rims. If you cant resolve the problem, maybe take a picture of the rear end from under neath so we can look at it.

You could have a bent frame. Do you know if it's ever been in an accident. I have frame measurements for 67-69 Camaros. If you need it let me know. I'll have to dig them out. That would be the first thing I try. Check all he measurements and see how straight it is. Then I would be looking at other things like a bent rear, spring perhces etc....
