A "new" engine is a rebuilt, unless an aftermarket block is used. But you're not going to get an engine like that in the $2-3k range. Do a search on the company selling that engine posted above. Look for quality feedback from those who have used them. I have nothing against using a local builder, as long as they build good stuff. Getting from a big company does not necessarily mean you're getting something better. And, there is no replacement for displacement. If you think you might be happier down the road with a 383, go that route now. With having one myself, I wouldn't want a 350.

I have a vortec truck motor. I can't complain. It does what it needs to. It has been retro fitted with a Vintage air unit and power steering. If you are on a budget, most auto yards have them.
