Default 1968 ss

My buddy is building me a 68 SS. It's basically just a shell now, pics later. Body is a true SS according to the VIN with an automatic but we are putting a muncie and a built 396. Ford 9 bolt inch rear with 3:73 and disc brakes all around, no emblems, no stripes except on the front, black 5 spokes, 17 and 18, houndstooth, power steering and brakes. In high school I had a 67 L78 and that's kind of what I am shooting for. Back in the day I paid 1,800 for it. Those damn solid lifters were a PAIN to adjust. Pics coming.

Sweet,I assume you meant a Ford 9 inch rear not 9 bolt.
Welcome aboard and put up some pics when you can, wish I still had the '69 I had back in the day she was a plane jane but I stuffed a 427/4 speed in and had a ball with it.

Which VIN number says it is a SS?
I was under the impression that the only thing that is useful on the VIN was 12437 12= Camaro 4=V8 37= hard top. The N or L after that is the factory.
68 has a cowl tag but even that has no SS option listing. The 67 Cowl tag did list some options but that was the last year of it. Without the original build sheet there is no way to it is an SS without the original stamped motor.

If I am wrong on this please let us know.

I would imagine you are right. That what the builder said and he is very reputable. It's no big deal really, it will have all new running gear and upgrades 4 wheel disc brakes, ps and pb so it will be better than any 68 SS that came off of the line in my opinion. He has sold many big block Chevy powered cars for well above 80k in Reno at Hot August Nights..........I'm happy.

I agree 100%. What does it matter what the shell started as? All the shells where exactly the same. but I would be a little worried if a professional that knows all this would blow smoke up you Ash. Also you can not ignore the value the market seems to place on real SS vs a clone. In many cases it could add 10-20k to the value of the car. If you buy a car thinking its a SS but years alter you find out its not you can take a real bath on it.

I don't have many years left and don't really care. I just want my last car ever to be like my favorite car I ever had.....I'll be happy. Peace.
