Get a stroker kit for the 454. Eagle and Scat sell them. It will give you 496 cubic inches. Add a decent cam. You should get pretty close to 500 hp without going over your parts budget.

Some times people learn the hard way.We who have been in this hobby for a while .Know from personal experience and from friends .On how to do and not do things. And just some times there is a need for patience. Especially when you income is limited. So there is no need to pay for something twice when you rush things.

I agree with that above ? but at this point 30 days the op has not responded so this thread is moot until he respondes ,but yes if one shops .an takes there time money can be saved ,though I found a good crate engine saves a lot of time an money unless your doing all the wrenching an then still ,if you find the right one ,I would go 383 an get my 500hp to the crank for about $3500.00 with heads an intake yes the turn key will be another $1000.00 , jegs has sales like it all the time or close ,but we get guys that leave these post then never hear from them again, another example is ebay $3499.00 long block with heads an intake 2 bolt main 496 a 454 block 515hp or 4 bolt ,you wont put one together one for that price shipped free ,if I was going with 454 I would want 700+ hp to make up for weight difference ,a good 383 makes the same HP an weighs a lot less 100lbs ,more room to work on too .a real good 454 making 650hp can cost 25k ,but that's to much

I want to drop a 454 bb in there just cause it sounds cool, fairly cheap, and I figure it will get me to the 500 ponies.
Looking for a weekend cruiser at the same time want to have some power.

2 questions please

1. is there a certain type of 454 block I should be looking for ? serial number, or maybe from a certain vehicle
2. $2k to $3k budget for parts can you suggest a Ideal build for the block heads, shaft, cams, carb, etc.

Really appreciate feed back as I am pretty anxious to start the project but would like some insight thanks in advance.
If you want a big block get one. Although there's nothing wrong with a small block that has been tweeked a little. A few months ago I wanted a new crate engine but I ended up getting a used 454. It saved my a lot on the purchase price. So far no headaches but I don't think I'm pushing 500hp yet. Bottom line, get what you can afford and you will sleep a lot better at night. You can always upgrade down the road when you have the dough.

^ Exactly. Over 2 months ago the OP posts the question, and hasn't even logged back onto this site since that day. That's like asking someone a question face to face, then walking away before getting an answer. I don't get it.
