Hello all. So I started tinkering on my camaro that was given by my uncle over the weekend. Thought I’d start adding water on the radiator and as expected found a leak on the thermostat area. Removed the housing and found what appears to be corrosion ( pic attached) after being stored for more than 20 yrs. engine has about 64K miles. Will I be better off with a new engine perhaps upgrade? Would really appreciate any input.

 

Take to a machine shop and have them hot tank it and check it over. Unless you are going for a full restoration with a numbers matching block. There are all sort of crate engines out there as well. If you decide to go that way as well. Do your research Remember its all up to you.

If mine, I would remove the block drain plugs just above the oil pan rail, remove housing, and run water through both sides cleaning out what could be done.
Then replace hoses, stat and add a can of Prestone Flush with water and drive her.
Then drain again.
Repeat as needed. True, 100% won't be removed, but, a good portion of it will be.
Remove radiator and flush it in reverse direction while shaking the bejesus out of it.
Dependent upon US location, fill with water, and drain until fairly clean.
Then go for the permanent coolant.
Don't forget to reverse flush heater core.
If engine runs good, keep it.
