Transmission Capability

Transmission Capability
Ive been looking for a transmission, and they all say something like, can withstand 400ft lbs of torque. is there anyway to increase that, is the clutch the issue, or is there a bigger reason why a tremec can stand so much more torque than a transmission 2k cheaper

The Tremec can withstand more than say the Borg Warner T-56 because the Tremec is just built stronger and that's why they are more expensive. The Borg Warner is also a more mass-produced trans so they will be cheaper and withstand less power and be built cheaper. Check out Tick Performance. They have a rebuild kit that can withstand like 700hp or so I think.

thanks for the recommendation, but that didnt answer my question, what makes it stronger? is it the bellhousing? the clutch? the only things that i know of that move in a transmission is the clutch and gears

Lol oops sorry, misinterpreted the question. It's the gears. Borg Warner T-56 gears are all helical gears, or easier explained, spiral gears. That is a strong design that is made to have the gears mesh together when shifting. I've never been inside a Tremec but someone once told me that the first 2 or 3 gears in a Tremec, the gears are a straight cut. They are louder while engaging, but a straight cut is the strongest design. I've only rebuilt and overhauled a Borg Warner, not a Tremec so I know more about the Borg Warner. I'm not sure if there are difference in the syncronizers in each trans. A better clutch and bellhousing to help too, but withstanding high power starts with gears and syncronizers.

It's not as easy as it sounds, just swapping out gears. There are a bunch of measurements and checks you have to make along the way. Check out Tick Performance. They have different level rebuild kits. You have to send your trans to them, but they are a great company and will do it right. I say check them out and talk to them and go from there.
