Which shade of purple? I had a purple '96, and that shade is like a dark maroon/purple.
The '97 purple is more of a periwinkle/purple. I liked the color of my '96 better.
If anybody laughed at me, they certainly didn't dare to do it to my face.

Look at the legandary 'plum crazy purple' - no problems there. Of course it was a dodge/chrylser product.

Look at bill's sig, look in OT....he has a metallic purple camaro and it looks pretty nice, and I believe the purple camaros are pretty rare.

yes sir.. My color (Bright purple metallic) was only available in 97 and 98, and there were ~883 in 97. 98 had a lot less due to paint problems i believe.. but let me tell you, the 98 BPM WS6 TA looks pretty sweet IMO..

but anyway, back to the subject.. If yours is a 96, then it should be a slightly different color than mine.. I'm not sure what the color would look like, but from personal experience i'll tell you this.. My friends did make jokes about it and whatnot, but thats because they're all a-holes, its just the way we kid around with each other though. I've never had anyone i didnt know well laugh at me, but i have gotten tons of stares while driving it..

I'm not sure about the Dark Purple Metallic, but camarosource says there were 2,291, so that still isnt too common..
