You can do it however you like. I have seen them all different ways.

Flat black is the traditional way of doing it, but I've seen gloss black as well. Depends on your taste. I'll be doing mine in satin black, so there's a slight sheen to it, but not glossy.

Are you going to use rattle can or take it to a body shop? If you take it to a body shop go with satin black and a flat clearcoat, and yes there is such a thing as a flat clearcoat. It will look and hold up better.

yeah im taking it to a body shop but thanks ill do the satin black with the flat clearcoat. i dont know when ill be able to get it done cause houston is really torn up right now. im staying in katy untill power is restored

Well we are glad you are okay. Up here in Fort Worth, we didn't get squat for rain, just a little drizzle.

On my car I've had first a flat black and next a semi-gloss black done at a shop! Wow I love the semi a million times better! It just goes with my wheels, stripes and everything. Now if theres nothing else black around the outside of the car then flat is ok. But for me the flat was right next to my stripes that are glossy and it look weird. And semi gloss to me seemsless cheapier too! Either way the black panel in any formaton light color cars is sweet. This is the semi gloss:
