The biggest indicator that you might have this problem is a clutch pedal that stays stuck to the floor, especially after making left hand turns. (The crank slides over and the flywheel slides away from the clutch, so the clutch won't engage...). If the play in the crank becomes bad enough, it breaks the crank angle sensor off the end of the crank, and the motor shuts down completely.

Actually, it is the second-generation 7-bolt motors that had the biggest issue with crankwalk- 95-98 DSMs. Mine is a few years too old for that.
The 6-bolt motor that I've got is highly prized for being able to withstand huge amounts of boost and running over 500 hp with stock internals.

When you have a chance post a picture of your motor spartan. And you are correct the 2nd gen 7 bolt is known for it but it is not unheard of in 1st gens. The first gen also comes with a better head, larger O2 housing, better turbo then the 2nd gen. 2nd gens are also heaver. Before you get any where close to the 500 mark you are going to have to do some major work to the head, fuel system, FMIC, turbo, and fuel management.
