5.0 vs. 79 Z28
You'll thump him off the line but by the end of the quarter he'll blow you away. That 302 will spin up faster and the 2.73's will give him more speed at the end. You will run out of gear and unless your motor can sustain 7 grand you will run out of acceleration to soon. His motor will have power in reserve and yours will be out of breath. Low gears require alot of motor in order to make speed.

All I know is many moons ago (8 or 9 yrs) I knew a guy with an 87 5.0 GT, stock drivetrain, T5 and mild motor, normally aspirated, beat 2 other stangs, Z28, a vette, and a 72 C10 truck (easy win), all in the same night at the track. He was tunrning consistent 11.7's in the quarter. the last two runs were on seven cylinders, # seven shorted a plug wire causing an intermitent miss once we taped it up, and we did'nt have spares. No, I've never owned one, but, I've had friends that had stangs of that generation and they were pretty formidable. I wached'em beat other cars and get beat by better cars, but, they will walk and talk. During the late 80's I watched alot of SCCA street stock class raceing at the track, at the time the front straight was the quarter mile drag strip, and I noticed that the mustangs would beat the Camaros on the straights almost everytime, but, could'nt out corner or out brake them. Considering the motors and drive trains had to be stock that tells me the mustangs had them beat in the gear department, which is why they could'nt compete in the corners, to much momentum. This may not be the best comparison, but, it's what I based my opinion on. I over exaggerated in my last post, I apologize. The 5.0 may not beat the Z28, but, I think he'll give him a run for his money.
i have had a bone stock 91 Z28 5.7 and in louden new hampshire at there drag track i never lost to a stock 5.0 stang, more even race when it came to the newer ones at the time like the 99's. and at that time i was pulling 13.9- 14.0 at around 99mph. and that was when the car had 120,000 on the motor.
