procharger or vortech

RE: procharger or vortech
I like Procharger better than Vortech. Not really much to choose between them since they are both centrifugal, but the Procahrger is self oiling which I wanted. I attached a picture of the one I have now, on my vette, a Procharger D1SC , its a bit bigger than the standard P1 but not nearly the capacity of their gigantic F model, still with a 3.5" pulley it generates only 5 lbs of boost on the 427. If I try a smaller pulley I get belt slip. I am waiting for a new, custom "overdrive" crank pulley to drive the SC faster: I'll be able to go to a 4" pulley on the SC (so the belt gets good traction) and still spin it 20% faster.
My favorite SC, period, is the Mangusen (Eaton M-112) and I've attached a picture of the one I had on the original 346 LS6 in the vette for about 2 years. Its is a screw-type (modified roots) blower so its a bit more effective at lower RPM. This was my favorite of all time. Not only was it reliable and no hassle (but then, so is the Procharger) but it built boost down low, and it had the most terrific supercharger HOWL when you got on it, a much better sound than the Procharger.

Lee, not to steal this thread, but why did you select centrifugal this time around?

I like the screw types like Eaton/Magnusen because their characteristics built boost a little lower in RPM. The biggest Eaton SC is the M-112 (the internal impellers displace 112 cubic inchs) and I knew that would not blow enough air for a 427. As a general rule of thumb, with positive displacement SCrs for the street, the SC displacement ought to be about 1/3 the engine displacement. 112x3 =336 so that was about perfect for a 346; Saleen and others use an Eaton M90 for for the 4.6 (281 cubic inch) Mustang V8.
There is no simple rule like that I know for centrifugal superchargers, by the way.
Anyway, there is a 122 cubic inch screw type made by Whipple or Lysome I think (still too small), and Kenny Bell offers a big one for Cobras, but there was no kit to fit it to a Corvette. Meanwhile, both Procahrger and Vortech offer a range of SCs that go to sizes that can blow much more air that the biggest Eaton or similar screw type (modified Roots) blower will.** I picked the D1SC from Procharger (D is the size range, SC indicates it is self contained oiling -- they make a D1 without that is like the vortech in that you have to run an oil pipe from the engine. Its bigger than the P1 size the recommend for Mustangs and stock block Corvettes and rated at "up to 900 HP" which I figured would do me. They make an very big F series which I think goes to 1200 HP. I think Vortech pretty much matches them there in various sizes.
**Of course, you can buy a real Roots type blower in REALLY big sizes (real roots types suck air in the top rather than one end of the SC body like a screw type Eaton does) like Weiand, but then you have scoop sticking out the top of your hood, etc.

votech is the best if you ever have a problem with them all you have to do is call there tech dept. they are wonderful my buddy put procharger on his baja boat with 454 motor it was anightmare parts was gone the insrtutions was misleading and he called there tech dept. there dummies the had no clue it also another buddy changed from vortech to prochargeron 91 mustang he didnt like it it took to long to build up boost the vortech does it faster i promise
