Default Yo, I'm new. Hi!

What's up, I'm new. Back when I was 16 my first car was a 1976 Camaro, it said Type LT, what that meant I never knew, but 5 years later (now) I still want another one, since I only owned that previous one for about 5 months. Recently my dad told me one of his coworkers was selling a 1970 z28 shell, it needs restoration and a motor. This week I will try and go down there and check it out, check vins, and generally just eye ball it. What do you guys suggest I look out for?

Thanks, see you around.

Yeah I dont know what the LT meant, it just had emblems on the sides that said Type LT in cursive lettering, or at least that's how I read it.

I didnt get to see the car myself today, but my pops went there and took some pics with his phone, although they are a bit blurry, this is what he brought.

Welcome to the boards! I'm new myself, just signed up yesterday. That's going to be a huge project. Make sure the rear shock towers are sound as those have a hard time in the second gens from what I understand. If it's a real Z28 it should have a "T" in the fifth number on the VIN (I'm pretty sure that's on all second gens) and you can check the body plate right in front of the VIN under the hood.

Type LT stands for Luxury Touring. Was a production run from 73 - 78 I think. Replaced the SS for a while until Chevy decided to bring that back. It was during the 70's gas crisis and they wanted it to look more for cruising and sound like good gas mileage than a muscle car gas hog so they tried to bring out the LT. Didn't last and I think it might have shown up in later years for very limited runs but I'm not very sure about that.

I really think I'm wrong about the VIN number. I do know that the 70 Z28's had 12 bolt rears and they all had rear swaybars with the F41 rear suspension. None of them had AC either. Also had a TH400 (non-square) transmission. If you have access to a Haynes or Chilton manual you can see what it looks like. Most autostores have an opened Haynes/Chilton manual already opened on the shelves (atleast around here) that you can thumb through if you need a quick verification for something. You can see the shape of the transmission pan in one of those or you can check this link.

Hope that helps!

Yeah, it's defiantely in the rough. I want to go see it in detail to get a good idea of what all is wrong with the car.

I'll go ahead and check the rear shock towers when I go see it, probably this weekend, I'll take some pics with my dslr as well so you guys can get a better view, either way I'll probably be bringing it home if everything clears out good with the DMV. My dad says it still has the transmission in it, and it's manual. I know the 70's were the only year with the 12 bolt rear, and from there on it was 10 I think, right? 12 bolts basically means the number of bolts on the axle ball, or what? I'm taking a stab in the dark with that, since I dont really know, so if you guys can inform me, that would be great.

The car doesnt have any windows, I dont know how easy it's going to be to source them. So I'll probably have to make space in the garage since the winter season is coming. Thanks for your responses and heads-up

Well I see door panel glass all the time on ebay if you're that desperate. I don't know how hard it is to find it locally at glass shops since I've been lucky enough to never have to replace it. The 10 bolt - 12 bolt thing is exactly what you said. It's the number of bolts in the differential's gear housing.

If you want to price a restore before you actually buy it you can visit sites all around the net from npdlink.com, yearone.com, etc., etc.

Just try to see how much damage is done to the frame rails, floor pans, trunk pan, etc. That can get costly to replace and repair especially to the frame.

Hope that helps,

No, the glass will probably be one of the last things I purchase for the car, since it would be nice to work on the car without glass, for better access to certain parts. I'll go ahead and count the bolts on the housing when I go see it. Thanks.

I didnt know how costly it could get, I'll check out those website, thanks for the good info.
