Bill:

I’m now 59 and originally from a small Railway town named Capreol just North of Sudbury Ontario, Canada but have spent the last 15 years moving around communities located on the North Channel of Lake Huron.. I’m presently in Sault Ste Marie but I intend to relocate to Spanish, very shortly, which has to be one of the most beautiful fresh water boating areas in the world.

I’m not Pure North American Muscle as I have owned cars that are not domestic and in my opinion superior to what Detroit had to offer at the time specifically when I was in need of a solid car with performance. The 74 142 Volvos and Toyota Crowns (probably the 1st Ricer – lol) are cars I hold a lot of respect for. I say hats off to the young generation with their 8,000+rpm double over head cam, multi-port, multi valve, EFI, computerized rocket rides. They are no different then I was when I had my head buried under the hood of a Muscle car or taking tours on my Laverda 750SF Café.

I may appear old and grayed in the eyes of our youth and they somewhat of an enigma to us but we are respectively the same breed with a common passion. Show me an 1100ES today and I’ll ride with them. Show them a Muscle car and they will ride with me. It’s a two way learning process. I like it and I want our youth to know it.

------------------------------------------------------------

I can frustrations after putting out hard cash on a finish and have it fall apart. From my experiences I’ve learned to stay clear from Mfgr’s demanding big dollars claiming that their product is the End All - there is not such thing and I do not like feeling victimized or placing myself in a position to be victimized so I stick it out and find away to do it myself then I can only be angry at myself if something does not work out.

Bought these none coated Hookers in1978. Every few years or unless they look like they require servicing, I do a 2 or 3 step cleaning with lacquer thinner, sand blast then brush on POR-20 Heat Resistant Aluminum Manifold Paint. This pic was taken after one summers use.

Although not show they are still a GO item and can tell that these 30 year old headers look better then most new products that have only been used for one season.

Welcome back, glad you are still living the dream most of us wish for. My dad is much in the same as you, 60 next year and we kick back and talk muscle cars, hot rods and classics all the time. He tells me all about what he had and worked on and I just smile, I know I was born way to late. He has owned almost everything I want and it always tinkering with anything that runs on fuel. It's a bit scary cutting the grass....lol. You are only a few hours from us, we are in Guelph. If you ever come this way PM me, it would be awesome to learn a bit of what you know and my dad would have a blast talking about the good days. I've not had the chance, but Welcome to the forum, even though you registered way before I, lol. As 74454 said, I also agree that it is awesome to have people like yourself and uncle bill on the forum sharing the knowledge and love of vehicles.

OK. After a year of running my combination this is what I've come up with:

1 - This is NOT a 1/4 mile machine as it has NO launch except to feather the cluth and burn the P295 N50 BF T/A's to shreds by fishtailing through the 1/4 with a top speed of approx 125 mph and 3/4 through 3rd grear. No Idea of the time slip except I know my old 4:10's launched almost perfect and topped 4th Gear at 119 mph thru the 1/4 with a 266 Crane H10 and slippery STD Bore and the ET was much Quicker. I was running Bias Ply Race Masters at the time short shifting at 5500rpm. There is no need to short shift now and no way to keep the BF T/A's hooked up under WOT thru a 1/4 mile; but this is NOT a 1/4 mile car.

2 - Top end I've yet to establish, been to Approx 150 mph and backed off for obvoius reasons - lots of throttle left )).

3 - This puppy spends most it's time at 2200 rpm but will maintain 7000 rpm in any gear. Gotta love the Anuallar Booster 830 Holley and free wheeling of the Low Friction 288AR-10 mechanical roller cam.

4 - Thinking about putting the Marine Hydralic Flat Tappet XM278H 12 back in to improve torque and intital throttle response as 7000rpm is NOT neccessary. This should bring the Dynamic Compression up to 8.25 from 7.92 and might require Higher Octane and Definitly Higher ZDDP Oil. The XM278H-12 has one mean Sound at Idle compared to the Bubbling Sound of the 288AR-10. If I had a Higher Static compression and lower gears, I imagine the 288AR-10 would perform better but would require Higher Octane and burn more gas compared to my beloved 3.08:1 HWY Gears. I'm not saying the 288AR-10 is that far off but definitly would not not want to go wilder. Right now I wish I could afford to have have a Billet Mechanical Roller with Cast Cam gear ground to the XM278H-12 Specs. That way I could run a heavier Valve Spring and push the RPM on occations and not worry too much about ZDDP percentages.

NOTE: The DONOVAN GEAR DRIVE sounds like a BLOWER at IDLE but not noticable at while driving = a very handy mechanism for changing out Cams. I can run this Engine on 89 Octane with the 10.0:1 Static Compression Ratio but I prefer Higher Octane and Dial the Mallory Ignition Advance when the engine is under load, listening for ping.

BigBlock Hemi:

Gotta say, I shut down many of Hemi's with a 327 Ponitiac Laurentian mostly because the owners did not know how to tune. You say your Dad is 60 = my age - I bet your father and I have met at some time.

WOW, Hemi's getting spanked. If you can't tune it you shouldn't own it!. My dad's almost always lived in the country but if you have ever met, I'm sure he would remember. Damn that would be cool if you met, you two would have a riot.
