New member and new Camaro owner
Hey there,
I just completed the purchase of my first classic, a 68 Camaro SS tribute. I live in Wasilla, Alaska and I purchased the vehicle from Streetside Classics in Dallas/Ft Worth.
I don’t have detailed documentation on the vehicle yet as its currently at a shop in Ft Worth getting some minor repairs. The inspection was good as the car has no rust and it appeared to be well taken care of.
What I do know:
427 w Holley 4b
Turbo 400
Aluminum intake
long tube headers
x-pipe exhaust
Question: my only concern about the vehicle is the 3 speed automatic. I travel 50 miles one way for work and I’d like to occasionally drive this beauty on nice days. Most of my commute is on a highway where speeds average 70-75 mph. I’m considering different ways to add overdrive. Gear Vendors was recommended by the mechanic currently working on the vehicle, but admitted it wasn’t a cheap option. It seems like I could have a shop replace the T400 with a rebuilt 700R4 for less money.
What would you guys recommend?

Welcome, martin, and congrats on the purchase of a correct year.
Enjoy the journey and your new chapter.
GV O'drive bolts onto trans case and has a switch to engage and requires shorter driveshaft.
THM700R4 requires more stuff, crossmember, shifter, get from Lokar, longer cooling lines, speedo cal, and maybe floor rework.
Other here will have better info.
