new guy with questions
I just bought a 68 which has been my dreamcar since my Dad pointed one out going down the road when I was about 11 years old. (25 years ago)Anyway, I'm going to slowly begin the makeover process of this car and joined this site for you guys to help me out along the way. The car's in great shape and runs like it was shot out of a cannon, but it still is gonna require a major restoration to satisfy truly becoming my "Dreamcar". For one it's geared to low for the street "at least for me" and I don't know the gear ratio. I'm guessing 4.11's maybe even 4.56's. Is there a way I can pull the coverand tell by looking at the gear. Judging by the way it runs I'm thinking if it's 4.56 I'll go to 3.73's if it's 4.11 maybe I'll go to 3.55's. Second what's the widest rear tire this car will hold without rubbing. I'm considering a mini-tub but don't really want to deal with that right now. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope to get to know some of ya'll. I'm gonna own this car till I die soexpect for me to be around for a while.

to check the gear ratio lift the rear of the car, and put the tranny in neutral. turn wheel around 1 time and pay attention to how many times the driveshaft turns around (you can mark it with tape or something to make seeing it easier). the number of revolutions is the same as the rear gear. so if its just past 4, 4.11s. if its about 4 and a half, 4.56. If just under four, 3.90, or 3.73. the revolutions will be exact, it will come down to your ability to eyeball the decimal.

no. the vin reads as 6 cylinder. it's got built 396 with a muncie 4 speed now. The guy I bought it from never even had the title transfered from when he purchased it. He had bought a few years back to resell but never did. He apparently did it for a living and just needed the money. He was selling 2 mustang fastbacks, 2 mach1's, and a 67 chevelle along with my car.He new very little about the specifics which is another reason I want to got through the entire car so I know exactly what all has been done to it.
