Well hello everyone. I am happy to find a forum like this. I was starting to think I might be in this alone or with high mechanic bills.

My uncle just passed away. **** rest his soul. He left me his two hot rods. His 72 Gran Torino and his 89 Camaro IROC with the 5.7 inside. Talk about a great uncle. My first car was a 1989 Camaro RS with the 2.8, so needless to say I am thrilled that he thought of me first when it came to these cars.

My questions are about the Camaro. The interior fabric about your head is starting to hang. The only thing holding it up is the interior light. This is a coup not a convertable by the way. It is in good condition, no rips or holes, just hanging. Is there a cheap do it your self fix for this. I was thinking some sort of spray glue and then push it back in place would work.

I know he started the Camaro weekly letting it run for a good hour. And he only drove it on sunny dry days. So my tune up will hopefully take care of the engine running a little ruff. It hesitates when you hit the throttle. So I am hoping plugs, wires, cap, fuel filter, and a good oil change will work. If not I will be back on here for more help.

My second question is that the battery dies if you let it sit for more than a day or two. I have tried two known good batterys. I have started the car and unhooked the battery and she ran fine. So the alternator is good. Any thoughts? I will be trying to use a meter this weekend to nail down where the drain is. Maybe you all know of a known issue with this car?

Thanks for any input. Take it easy.

no idea what they say.
But yea I have two. Actually three if you count the Gran Torino.

I have my 89 Camaro RS with the 2.8. It is beat to heck. And now this cherry 89 Camaro IROC 5.7. So yea I am sitting pretty. I am just happy they were not sold off to some one looking for a race car. His two cars have very low miles on them. The ford has 45,000 orig on a the original 351 cleveland v8, and the IROC has 65,000 orig. Nothing on these cars have been changed with the exception of tune up every other year. I will post pics soon. Thanks

sorry about the Uncle Congrats on the cars

The battery problem could be a drain due to wiring/short somewhere. Or it could be that the charge is not getting to the battery. You tried 2 name brand batteries but were they new? I would not try a battery from another car to yours to test out anything unless you know for SURE that the battery is virtually new.

See if while the car is running that the battery is actually getting charged, FIRST. then go from there.

The cloth at top---- if you use a glue would more than likely look bulgy. It has to be pulled tightly and then "fasten" how ever it is done, whether it be staples, clamps...etc. It won't look really smooth like it should if you do it another way.

Welcome to the forum and sorry for your loss. Your uncle sure did have good taste and it's good to see the cars stay in the family rather than go to people who will beat them to crap. We are all here to help so any questions post away in the 3rd gen section, more 3rd gen owners check the 3rd gen section more frequently.

If the headliner is sagging your best bet it to take it out VERY carefully and you can use a spray glue but you have to pull it tight and evenly. It's a bit of a pain if you don't get it right the 1st time but it can be done.

If he only let it run for an hour and hardly drove it, I would suggest to take it for a good hour run, hit the highway and clear out the cobwebs. I know my 87 Iroc hated to sit. A tune up would probably do it but will never know until you get it on the road. The hesitation could be a very minor thing as it being very low original miles.

I also found on my Iroc the same issue with the battery going down fast. Clean up the terminals, give it a goos trickle charge overnight and check to see if you have a flat cell in the battery. I know it sounds dumb but is there anyway that the stereo could be left on or the interior light?. My car has electrical demons....just takes time and you will find them. What were the 2 name brands of battery's you tried?. Good luck with the cars and keep us updated. Please post up some pic's of your rides when you have a chance and enjoy the forum.
