Default New with a 94 z28

Hi everyone; I’m new to the forum, hence my posting in this particular section.

Anyway, I’m 25 years old and have been driving since I was 16. I’ve always owned my own cars, not that I’m special, it’s just that I’m enthusiastic enough about them that I bought my first, a 91 Buick Skylark, about 6 months before I even had a license. It was decent looking and only had 91k on it, but it was trash. It wasn’t a top end car to begin with and at the time it was already more than 15 years old. I paid about $1100 for it, all communion money, and only had it on the road for about 6 months-a year before it was pretty much useless.

After that, I bought a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP that had 70k miles on it. It was nice looking again, but I think I was had. I bought it in New Hampshire. I’m from MA myself. NH is a great state, but I wouldn’t trust buying a car there again. I’m sure there are a lot of great cars for sale in NH, but their laws on what can be deemed a “good” used car is pretty laxed and like I said, I didn’t have luck with that car. I had it for about 3 years, then it went to hell and everything started to go, in-fact, it was a dud from day one of my having it. I sold it for $300 and it needed to be towed out of my driveway as a scrap car… all with about 100k on the engine.

Following the GTP, I bought a 05 Mustang with 42k miles on it. I like Mustangs, not my favorite car, but I like them. It was an awesome car. I feel like a lot of Mustangs are foolish looking, but this one was nice. Silver with black mustang lower door decals, looked brand new, had a nice spoiler, leather seats, moon roof, and traction control. It was the premium edition. It was a great car… then someone plowed into me and almost killed me. Well, I was fine, but I shouldn’t have been and the Mustang certainly wasn’t; it was completely-completely totaled.

I got my insurance and looked for a new ride. I was thinking about a new Challenger, but I was still in my last year of college and don’t work full time, plus student loans. I figured it would be a better decision to buy another car, with no loan. I’ve always really only like coups, particularly “American muscle cars.” Mustangs were always my least favorite. I was looking for a Camaro, always been my top car. My mother’s first car was a 68 Camaro and she always talked about it, plus I just realized what badass cars they were. Always wanted one and found what I thought was a steal, at least in terms of prices seen in the Northeast. It was a 94 z28, totally stock, cherry red with a black t-top roof, cloth seats (oh well…), and nice alloy wheels. Overall the car looks like it just rolled off the showroom; not a scratch on it, anywhere. I paid $8,000 for it, which seems to be a steal for the condition and mileage, add to that the fact that it also runs and drives better than any car I’ve ever owned.

It had 27k on it when I purchased it last June and I’ve gotten up to about 35.5k since then. I always planned on keeping the mileage low, but was intending on driving it daily for a couple years. Just don’t have the heart to do it though, for a couple reason. First being that it doesn’t drive in snow, not at all, at least not in the snow we have up here; and I’m use to driving powerful cars, some even with rwd, in the snow. Maybe it’s just that my neighborhood gets hit pretty hard and clean-up is tough on our street. If I could get it up my hill then it would be OK on snowy roads, but it’s impossible with the horrible clean-up in my neighborhood. It’s just not a normal car; it’s a legitimate sports car. I’m sure I could put snow tires on it and/or put sand in the trunk, but it would still be tough and this leads to my second reason for not wanting to drive it during all season… the mileage and wear ‘n’ tear. It seems like a waste to have a 94 z28 in mint condition with 35k miles on it as a daily driver, especially with them becoming harder to find, and especially still in great shape with such low mileage. I’m looking at Sunfires, Cavaliers, and Escorts for an everyday driver and will be relegating the Camaro to the garage during non-summer seasons. I really only want to put 2-4k on it a year and would like to keep it for a very long time.

Anyway, I’m really good with cars, at least in terms of history and make/model. I can ID most cars by glancing at them and can differentiate make/model/year from differences in lights, features and all that… but I have to admit that I’m clueless in terms of the inner workings of an engine. In the event that something comes up, I figured it would be good to join the forum. It’s had a couple weird quirks, but it’s clear that it’s a mint car and engine. Aside from that, I just really like cars, Camaros especially, and now that I own one, I suppose I’m a new enthusiast and I’d like to learn more.

Well, I look forward to talking with you people, and thanks in advance.
