i have an automatic and on the shifter it says P R N D(with a square around it) D(without a square around it) 2 1. whats the diff. between the two D's

Welcome to the forums. Tell us about yourself and your car, or just tell us about your car. Post some pics when you get a chance. The D with the sguare is the overdrive, plain D is regular drive. Use theOD when you are cruising, D when you want to pass. Its kind of like a whole nuther gear.

yep...it actually is another gear...

1=1, 2=2, D=3, OD=4

Isn't it 3 and kicks into a 4th when you cruze to save on gas?

yep just put it there the whole time......if you want to make a pass you can drop it down, but dont have to. The trans will shift to third when you mash the gas,and go back th the od when you drop rpm's.

Leaving it in OD will allow it to shift thru gears 1-4...if you leave it in D it will shift thru 1-3, likewise if you leave it in 2 (1-2), and 1 (stays in 1st)

I leave mine in D, bc if you leave it in OD it will shift into 4th @ 40-45mph which is to low for me (I like the rpms up)
