Question 2002 ss & z28

OK, I am a noob to the forum and just started researching for a potential mid life sports car.

I see some 2002 Camaro's listed as Z28's and others as SS's can those two options be on the same vehicle? Or are the dealers just confused when they list a car and have both or list an SS as a Z28 etc.

Want an LS1 Camaro with manual, prefer the SS but have the above confusion during my searching.

I downloaded the sales flyer from 2002 and it makes it look like the answer is NO to both Z28 & SS on one vehicle.

Thanks in advance

All SS's are Z/28s, but not the other way around. '96-02 had three different "main" packages. Base, Z/28, or SS. Base is your sixxers, though they did have a performance package. Z/28 is a "base" performance. SS's, depending on how they are optioned, are either equal too or higher performance than the Z/28. Be careful when buying an SS, as many like to pawn off their Z/28s as SS's to make more $$$. RPO codes R7T as well as WU8 are things to look for. As well as an optional SLP sticker on the passenger door.

SS were done by SLP. The main thing they got was the SS hood, rear spoiler and CAI, 32mm sway bar, upgraded shocks and aluminum drive shaft. I am sure I am forgetting something. There were also lot of options SLP could add onto your SS. The options that came from SLP would be listed on the SLP label.

In the old day SS meant a whole upgraded drive line and Z28 was a track ready car, on the 4th gens Z28 meant V8 and SS was just some bolt on upgrades. In the 5th Gen SS means V8 and Z28 means track ready car Zl1 is now taking the place of the old BB 396 SS. I really wish GM stick to a script.

Thanks, that helps clear it up.

I will be looking for an SS manual w/ SLP adders.

SS's have on RPO sticker: Z28, WU8, and Y2Y.
All true bove described and several different mods from SLP.
Basic models did not have pass door SLP RPO sticker, but have hood, four post spoiler, 17 inch wheels, and Hurst short shifter.
Next models have above plus SLP sticker with mods added, also, grille, exhaust, and mats including hatchback mat.

SLP will tell you what mods done to Camaro if you provide them with last eight VIN digits. I'm on my second SS, an '02. Love it.

Don't want a convertible, will be picking up a T-top SS in a couple weeks when my schedule allows me to go get it.

10.5 hr drive, but in my work territory, so business trip to that area is required that week

The first camaro deal fell through, as the dealer sold it out from under our agreement (well his brother did)

But bonus for me as I found a better deal and it's 100 miles closer and has EVERYTHING + more than I would ever want done already.

2002 SS w/ ALL SLP Options and more with 7100 miles on the clock.

Silver w/ black leather interior
1LE
manual
T-tops
Subframe connectors
Wilwood brakes
Headers & full exhaust
Moser 12 bolt rear end w/ 3.73's
& the list goes on......
