Default Z28 bogging out and back firing

The problem im having is that my car is bogging out at about 80 mph about 5000 rpm and is letting out a large back fire. During the series of pops it becomes unresponsive with the gas. A friend driving behind me told me that he also saw flames shoot out. I didn't see it so I'm not sure on the flames. Another friend who knows lt1's suggested it might be my ignition control module or maybe a bad opti. Any opinions or suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Thanks.

scan it for trouble codes. could be a number of things including the icm or opti or just a bad connection or fouled plugs or fouled/failing 02 sensors or fuel pressure or plug wires,,,,

Oh okay. Well I know my check engine light works. It's been on not to long ago but went off after we gutted my cat out.

if the light came on it should have a code, that is unless you unhooked the battery that would clear the codes.

good grief man, what rear gear ratio do you have to be spinning 5k rpms at 80 mph?

sounds ignition-ish to me

if i were a gambling man....................optispark

did he mention if it was at WOT or just driving at 80 lol. I would think that a code would come up if he was at 5000 rpms just driving normally/ highway cruising. My first action would be have it scanned and maybe have them look at some live data from the MAF and O2's to get an idea of how the fuel/air mixture is and then if all looks good, I would guess the opti is bad. Craby knows best on these lt1's though so his advice is always good to follow.

haha. idk if it was exactly 5k i just remember glancing at it when the popping began and it was on that end of the tach.

and greenmachine96 I'm going tomorrow to get it scanned, i'll see if they can read some live data and find out about the fuel/air ratio.
