95 is obd1 and 97 is obd2, the console is different.

Yes i understand that the 97 is a obd 2. I was more curious as to what sensors and etc will not work from my car to the newer. Im sure mechanically there isnt much differance. I have heard about people switching from obd 2 to obd1 due to ease of tuning etc... My main concern is can my transmission be used in the 97?

Replace the 97s PCM and knock sensor with both pieces from your 95. Instant OBD1 conversion.

Also, the trans should bolt right up. You're going to need the flywheel, clutch kit, hydraulics, and pedal assembly. The driveshafts should be the same. You should also swap over the 95 rear so your speedo will read correctly.

You do not want to and Automatic car unless it is an amazing deal and you are good with a mig welder and do not care about the future value of the car. The trans tunnel will need cut out and swapped. You should be able to find a 93-97 M6 car with a blown motor for around $2500, I paid $1500 for mine. The $2500 seems like a lot compared to the A4 shell but by the time you part out the T56 and the 3.42 rear your going to find it is cheaper.
Carful swapping PCM years there are some security system changes on some years, I think the 96 up that require a change in the harness. We had a member that swapped a 96 PCM into a 94 and it was not plug and play.

Also another thing to think about if you buy a M6 car and install your rebuilt motor/trans you have a totally legit car with a rebuilt motor. But if you “Swap” in a T56 into an A4 car your car will now fall under the “Franken Car” title. Unless you lie, 80% of the general public will stop reading your for sale add once they see the word swap. This greatly devalues the car, more than enough to justify waiting and finding the right M6 car.

If you do fine a year other then 95 I suggest finding a complete car with a damaged motor so you can just use your “hardware” and use the PCM and wiring harness that is correct for the car. There are people out that that swap this stuff around all the time but they tend to forget that a lot of people just do not have the back ground. Fixing a broken car can be pretty tuff, Fixing one that your not 100% sure is even together in a way that will works means you cannot even use a standard repair flow chart. You need to fully understand how the systems work together to trouble shoot it.

Well im pretty good with a welder and a torch and i own both. This wouldnt be my first auto to manual swap either. Just the first f body ive done. On that note i hear what your saying loud and clear but the answer is yes it can be done its just going to be some work. I can say that i had no intentions of ever getting rid of my camaro. So when this ones done im sure it ll be around for years. The trouble is i need to get into a car soon! And craigslist around here isnt hitting on much . Either over priced, or the body is completey screwed or its just plain ugly... Ill find the right car eventually. Im willing to travel a ways if anyone knows of a good one please let me know cash in hand!!
