Exclamation Transmission Issues and Questions

Vehicle: '95 Z28 M6 'vert.

I have noticed that it is getting progressively harder to shift the car. It does not grind, but I have to really push the shifter into the gear position. Like, jam it in. But with the car off, it is smooth as butter to shift.

I replaced the clutch less than 1000 miles ago.

I bled the clutch system, and it is full.

Any ideas?

Either the clutch is not releasing fully, or the synchros are worn out. Try double clutching (using the proper procedure). If the gears are easier to shift, then the synchros are sick.

Well, it looks like you were right about the synchros... Double clutching made it much easier to shift...

And 6th gear kicked it...

Do you think I am better going with a rebuild or a junkyard tranny? I can rebuild it myself...

How can you tell the difference in the clutch or the synchros? Some one told me that if it is the synchros then it would grind going into gears. Mine doesn't grind either but I have to push Really hard for 1st and 2nd gear. It grinds when going into reverse though.

You would be best with a rebuilt tranny. Getting one from the local yard is a gamble as to condition. A manual is better than an auto from the yard, but you could still get one with worn synchros.

it may be the clutch master cylinder is not working fully and when you pump it its disengaging fully. get under there and see if you can tell if clutch is moving more after pumping

Best way to tell the differents between clutch and syncos is reverse. If reverse is grinding and it did not use to then your clutch is not disengaging. If reverse works fine then your clutch is disengaging.

The reverse gear has no syncs.

Simple test. With the car in 1st gear and clutch pushed to the floor, start the car. Now leave the clutch pushed in and remove the shifter front 1st and slowly put it in reverse. Does it grind? If it a small grr like two or three clicks it most likely is not the major issue but if it really grinds then you clutch is not disengaging. In really bad clutch cases the shift will not want to come out of 1st gear.

When syncs go bad there is always a reason. Ether a failing clutch was driven to long that way, high miles or an aggressive drivers shifting really hard. Shifting super hard will also bend the shift forks and cause play in the shaft for the forks. This can cause the new syncs to grind.
