trans swap

Are you looking to replace the A4 in your '96?
If so, it will be a lot of work. There are about 500 big and little things that need to be changed to make an A4 car into a manual. Remember that the 4th gen cars are basically built around the drivetrain.
IMO it is just not worth the effort.

yeah i know. i dont wanna do a trans swap in my white Z. my uncle is going to give me his 95 Z thats been sitting in his yard for like 6 years (after a long convincing i had to do), but the head gaskets are blown and he said something about the gears inside the trans. all in all he said the trans was shot and it already is a 6sp. well a local is selling his 6sp out of a trans am for like $500 so i was wondering if it would bolt up

I would think that they would. You will need the all of the clutch and bell housing parts from the '95, but the 6 sp out of the LS1 should bolt right up. Just to be safe, pull the tranny from the '95 and verify the length and bolt patterns.
Or, you can call your local wrecking yard and they should be able to look up the "compatability" of different transmissions for your '95.
