the security light?
I take it your engine runs, since you didn't say it doesn't start. And you don't have a factory (VATS) key?
Sounds like someone already bypassed the security system.
And no, it doesn't affect performance.

Does your key have the resistor pellet in it, or is it a plain key?
Has your security light always been on since you've owned the car, or did it just go on?
With a functioning ignition security system, the engine won't start, it won't even turn over.
If you have a plain non-resistor key, and the engine turns over and starts, your security system has been bypassed. How well or how half-assed is what you don't know.

Check the VATS info here as suggested earlier. Then go and check what was done to your car. I've seen hack wiring jobs where it's a wonder that the car didn't burn to the ground. Not everyone is good at wiring, and you could have a bare wire touching ground, or a loose connection. It's also quite possible that your two problems are unrelated.
