Default security key

My 96 rs chip key is getting worn an sometimes the security feature won't let me crank the car an i have to keep tring to get it read it good.

Was wondering if i can buy a new key? or have to replace the hold thing?

Go to a GM dealer they will fix you up with a new key. Have you tried cleaning the key and the lock cylinder with contact cleaner?

no i haven't just notice the chip on the key is looking more an more worn out.

an thanks, how much would that be from dealer?

dealer will charge a arm and leg. get a ohm meter and find out what ohm reading u get from the key. one side of the bean to the other. there are like 15 different ohm readings. u can pick one up at a place like this once u know the number needed.

thats what i did, got the key for about 14 bucks including shipping and the local hardware cut it for free.

I recently got a new key also, from my local Chevy dealer, cost me $22

thats a good deal from a dealership. when i asked here they wanted 60 bucks.

For both keys or just the ignition? When I called they said $40 for both ignition and door lock keys, and like $22 for just the ignition. I guess it varies from dealership to dealership?
