Default SBC & LT1 Differences?

Alright here's what I am trying to figure out...

I am starting my first LT1 build and I have built gobs of race motors but no LT1s. I work as a mechanic part time and have worked on many different engines and even built LS1s but all I have ever done to a lt1 is intake gaskets.

I have tons of engine goodies laying around and my left over race stuff gets handed down to my street cars. I know the front of the block is different mainly for the opti. And the intake is a little different too. What I need to know is what I can use from a sbc in an LT1? Is the difference in the heads just the bolt pattern like on a vortec? Pistons? Rods? Does it use the one piece rear main crank or is it more specific?

I know I am askin alot but any help is appreciated.

Thanks, Jr

ok there's not much from a sbc that will work on the lt1. the internals are the same 1 piece main. the difference is the reverse flow heads. changing the water pump and all. the sbc heads can be converted dont know how though. hydrolic roller cam hydrolic roller lifters rockers all the valve train parts dont need to be specific except the cam.

Cool man that helps alot. I have a good crank. So I'll need a cam and start hunting to see what it takes to convert the heads!

Thanks, Jr

the reciprocating assembly is the same as all other 1 piece rear seal engines. the lifters, lifter retainer, push rods, rockers and rocker arms are the same as other factory roller engines. the oil pan is the same, the exhaust port bolt pattern is the same , but the exhaust ports are D-ports. the starter will work on most over gen 1 engines. everything else is different. the heads have several extra cooling passages, the water pump passages in the block are different, the intake is a dry intake, the timing cover isn't even close to a gen 1 engine.
