Removing a governor
I know Iasked about the governorsmid Novemberbut now that I know I have one how do I remove it?
Someone on the forum mentioned that Jet sold a tranny programmer for like $180. After going to their site I called JET performance to ask about em and the guy I talked to said their programmers only worked on the 95 and up transmissions, NOT the 94. I never realized there was a difference; I thought the 94 and 95’s had the same transmissions. Is there any other way to remove it?
Sorry if this is a dumb question.
Thanks,
Jake

RE: Removing a governor
Same transmission, different PCM computer.
What you have is a speed limiter, which is part of the software load of the PCM and has nothing to do with the transmissions except that is gets the speed indication fron the VSS on the transmssion tail shaft. You need to get the PCM reprogrammed if you want to delete the speed limiter software. A Hypertech hand held tuner as an option to delete the limiter. You can also get a Chevy dealer to reflash the PCM, but they will only do it if the car is equipped with Z rated tires, so that they won't be held resposible if you tires blow out and damage yourself.

RE: Removing a governor
I truly don't think any stock 4th gen Z28 is going to go 170. If the car came with the 120 MPH spedometer and non speed rated tires it has aspeed limiter that comes in @ 115 MPH. If it came with Z or higher speed rated tires and the 150 MPH spedometer, it has no speed limiter. In this last case the speed is limited by engine power, and/or final drive ratio. The Lt1s were good for about 150-155, and the LS1 were good for around 160-165. It take a big bunch of power to get another 10 MPH at those speeds.

RE: Removing a governor
You can try Jegs or summit for a Hypertech programmer, but for less money you can do a PCM swap an get a PCM programmed to handle all your mods. That still leave you with the low speed spedometer, and you will need to use the tach to figure out how fast you are going. If you get a used programmer, you have to make sure that the last car it was used on has been set back to stock by the programmer, otherwise it won't work. They are mad so that they can only be used on one car at a time.
