As long as you have a die grinder and the proper set of abrasives, yes you can port and polish your heads. I would practice first on the cheapeset set you can find at the junk yard. Take your gasket and line all the bolt holes up. Secure it to the head and then take a permanent marker such as a sharpie and mark the material between the runner and the gasket. That is the general guideline as to how far you can port it. Take the heavy cut abrasive and start working the material down. Make sure you are even and get all the way towards the center of the head where they start to turn down into the combustion chamber. Leave about 1/16" and then start using the medium cut and bring it down to about 1/32" from the perimeter of the allowable "machined" surface. Bring out the lightest abrasive and start "polishing" your work. As far as the combustion chamber, I would leave that alone. Each head is different and it should really be done by a professional.

Porting is something better left to experts unless you have one of them guiding you. Remove materail from the wrong spot, and things will get worse instad of better, and the head is ruined. The one safe thing you can do, is gasket matching head and manifold ports, so there will be a smooth transition from one to the other.
