Default Optispark Replacement

Ok i've narrowed my problem down to the optispark. I have a 93 Z28 LT1. I just need a few pointers before I dig in. What is my best route to take when it comes to a replacement optispark? I have seen a few brandshere and there:Accel, GM, etc... The car has a new water pump on it but looks like before it was replaced the old junky pump did its share of damage to the opti. Is there anything I can buy or do so that this doesnt occur again? Any kind of shield or anything in case the water pump starts to leak again? Also, where might I find a good set of detailed instructions on the removal and installment of an optispark? I am mechanically inclined but I am just curious if there are any instructions that might keep me from taking unnecessary steps. Thanks for any suggestions

Matt

If you are doing the work yourself, (i assume you are) when you get the opti, take it apart, just the case so that you have to halves. Then seal it with some silicone sealant or w/e, any local parts store should have some high heat sealant, just so that even if your water pump does leak again, or your radiator hoses (happened to my 97) it will just roll of the opti intstead of into it.

look into your distributer. the oill can leak into it and block the cencer and couse mis fires and if you are going to change that you should just get a electric water pump.

Well, if you're willing to shell out some cash, you might as well go with an MSD opti. Not sure of everyone's opinion of MSD here, but I am a fan.

I've heard good things about the MSD unit, and it's not much more expensive than an OEM GM unit, so you may as well go for it if you have to replace the opti anyway. If you do decide to go with it, get some thicker wires, I hear it has a tendancy to fire through stock wires.

you cant beat the msd.. ive gone through 3 gm optis before i tried it. but as mentioned already, get thicker wires, it blew spark out the sides of my autolite 7mm specials. i just went with the msd 8.5mm's. you cant beat them either.. i dont have 500 hp and it took .4 tenths off my 1/4 mile, but it is an all around better opti with better built components and a better seal to prevent water pump damage
