My '97 SS feels down on power. ???

Ok, I just joined. In case you missed my introductory thread on the New Members forum. I have a 1997 SS 6-Speed. Stock except replacing the 2ONTL exhaust to a loudmouth. I didn't think it was sacrilege since the car and the exhaust were both made by SLP. Seems like the car is down on power. Now, since I live at 7,500' above sea level I'm losing about 25% anyway but it used to be better. Recently I got a code for cat inefficiency and I tried tricking the computer with an O2 spacer you can buy legally from Walmart, But I still have power loss. I've never modified anything else. Maybe 70K miles. No sputtering, missing, or anything like that. The car has been problem-free except of course window motors. The car has every option GM and SLP could put on it except traction control. Even crazy ones, like the SS car cover and an extra set of wheels. Is it time for new plugs and wires? What plugs are recommended? Any other ideas? |
I will say you're not gonna want to change the spark plugs often, I use ngk iridium. check/change fuel filter and air filter. if plugs are fouled then 02 sensors may not be happy. if you dont have a maintenance record consider changing all fluids. to get an idea how the plug wiring are holding up, find a really dark place, open hood and start engine. look the plug wires over and if you see a light show they is not happy.

Thanks, will do.
