Mpg's
Hey all,
I'm on my first LT1 car and I've only had it for a little while. My last camaro was a 6cyl and the one before that was a 350 crate motor that a friend had built from the ground up.
My car had a K&N CAI and an aftermarket Mass Airflow Sensor, pre installed. I've been getting 16 in the city since I changed the fuel filters (in line and in tank). It was getting 12 before that.
With the LT1 and a 6 speed I was expecting a little better. Somewhere around 18 to 20. If I'm off my rocker just tell me but, I'd like to squeeze another 50 miles out of each tank if possible.
What should I realistically be expecting for MPG's, and are there any tips you have to boost my current MPGs?

It's a '95 z28. No clue how old the plugs and wires are, 90% chance of them being stock, the o2 sensors and opti I'll just go ahead and say, are gonna be stock. And no I have not done anything to the eprom, but the autozone code checker didnt pick anything up. Last, negative on the heavy foot. I keep it under 3k rpms.
What plugs and wires should I look for? if there is a specific type that I should be using.
As for the o2 sensor and opti can I change those myself or is that a take it to a shop job.
And if I go to the dealer and have them flash the eprom and load the updated software would that help?
How much would this set me back on average?
Thanks
BB

The '95s are a little wierd on how the scanner connects. The computer is an OBDI but some of the cars have OBDII connectors. So you need a cable that will connect an OBDI scanner to an OBDII connector. Many times the guys at the store only look at the connector and either hook up an OBDI or OBDII scanner. If he hooked an OBDII scanner to your car, he wouldn't pull any codes.
Good quality plugs and wires. You will have to get wires for a car with an OPTI. Not just any SBC set of wires will work. I replaced mine with some Accel 8.5mm wires I got from JEGS.
If you have some mechanical knowledge and common set of tools (which seems you do as you replaced the fuel filters), you can do it all in a day. You will want to replace the waterpump at the same time just to be safe and prevent leaks. You definitely don't want the waterpump to crap out and leak all over your new OPTI after a month. Get a good quality OPTI. There are some cheapos out there for around $100, and you will probably regret putting one in.
I wouldn't take it to a dealer for a new tune. You would be much better off going with someone like Solomon's or PCMforless. I haven't used either, but other guys here have used them and can let you know what they think.
BEFORE YOU GET A TUNE make sure that you have no codes stored in the computer (if you do get the repairs done before the tune) and give your car a good tuneup. Getting a tune will not repair old or broken sensors or plugs or wires.

i would start with changing plugs, wires and 02 sensors. then pull the injectors and have them cleaned and flow tested. these are all things you should be able to do. pick up a factory service/shop manual.
29mpg, not a chance in hell. i doubt the v6 can even see 29mpg. these cars were epa rate at about 24 highway and thats back when gas was better than it is now with all the ethanol. there may be a way to detune the pcm for better gas milage but 29. i almost spit coffee on the screen when i read that, lol.
for the cable aldlcable sells a nice one for 95 cars $59.99 i think its the cheapest one out there. has the obd2 connector for obd1 95 cars. also check, your car may have either connector if its a early 95 http://www.aldlcable.com/sc/details.asp?item=aldlobd2u

i averaged 27 with my first 93 z28. 29 is freeway driving with easy traffic and i had gotten there a couple times on long trips with that car. the 6 speed can get better mpg and a couple guys have clamed to reach over 30 on the open freeway with it. this 93 on the other hand has not gotten better than 25. it runs way rich when cold and always has. now i can get 20 on long open road trips but thats with lower gears and 315's on the back. the tires alone lost me 2 to 3 mpg. im still averaging 17.
No doubt that 27-29 is possible, vettes do it every day. But what is a realistic number to expect out of my 95, if I go have the OBD1 checked and no codes show and i do all the plugs wires etc? Im just hoping for 20-25 mpg (20 being city, 25 hwy) that would average 300 miles per tank. I stretched it to 250 this week, but 300 is my goal point. Is this reasonable? Or is this a lost hope?
