Misfiring, Running Rough, Basically everything!
Hi, I just joined the Camaro Forum Again, I came here for help before and was successful so first off, Thanks.
But Im Back unfourunantley. I own a 1994 Camaro Z28. I had it in the shop about 4 weeks ago. I was replacing my Water Pump, Cap and Rotar, Because my water pump was leaking because every time I would drive thru a puddle or when I washed it, My car would act as if it was going to stall. Anyways. I got that part fixed!!
My problem now is that when I drive the car first thing in the morning it couldnt run any better than a brand new car would. But Say I go somewhere leave it sit for about 40 minutes and go out to drive it, As soon as I hit the street and give it gas It sputters terriblly. And Doesnt basically go anywhere (and this is when the pedal is to the floor!!) And once I floor it to try and get it to go, I will backfire and make a few loud poping sounds. Then It will basically let go and take off like it should. And then its usually fine after that.
The whole point of me writting this letter is for your opinions. I am taking it into the shop sometime Next week. My dad thinks I should replace the whole Distributor and that will fix it or atleast the backfiring. I'm just looking for other opinions and thats considering I am a female and I really dont know "too" much about cars but I really want to fix my Camaro asap.
No lights are on (check engine or anything).
Is there something else I can check out without it costing me an arm and a leg.
Thanks for any suggestions, they're greatly appreciated!

Sounds like the typical wet Optispark problem. The electronocs that make the Optispark work reside in the body of the distributor, and most likely got damaged when the water pump leaked on it. Replacing the cap and rotor does not fix the problem, the entire unit needs replacement. FYI for many years GM did not sell separarte caps and rotors beacuse of this reason. When the opti fails on the OBDI cars (94 & 95) it usually does not set a trouble code. It is also a very good idea to replace the ignition wires and spark plugs at the time the distributor is replaced.
I agree with Z28 pete here. I also had a 94 z28 camaro and had the same problem u did. I got the optispark replaced, new spark plugs, and some new MSD spark plug wires. After that she ran beautiful.
