I already stated why I'm going with the obd2. I just didn't know if I would be modifying the block to make it obd2. and the car has already been stripped of all wiring so sticking the obd2 harness in is going to be as much trouble as putting the obd1 back in.

and I can get 2-3 decent automatic lt1 93-97 z28s for the same price as just the ls1 engine. so no I'm not interested in an ls.

edit: and to me it doesn't make much sense to me to spend an extra $6k for an extra 45 hp.

if your happy with 275hp and are looking at building to 350 then your good to go. its the ease that the next 150-200 are with the ls1 that is the key. i have a 400hp lt1 and about 4k into engine, could have saved a few hundred doing it a different way. 400 to the wheels is not that hard with a lt1, anything after that will come hard and cost big unless your adding nitrous. ls is a different story, 400 is just a start.

nitrous is a joke. if you want real power do it right the first time.

I am aware of what the lt1 and ls1 are capable of. I'm not wasting $1500 just to make the ls1 fit when the lt1 only needs a transmission crossmember to bolt in. I have more important things to spend my money on then just an engine and trans.

Do you nave a you pull it lot around you? If so I think you could pull most the of the parts you need to convert the older LT1 block to OBD2 out of a Caprices or Buick Wagon. Last time I was at my local you-pull-it they had a 96 Roadmaster. They want $90 for the motor AS-IS. He warned me to go and take off anything I wanted because the only tools they used to remove motor is a torch and a pair of lock cutters.
Also if you could find someone parting out 96-97 car with a blown head gasket they tend to sell the damaged motors on the cheap.

Going with the OBD2 is a good move, you can program out all that Body/brakes stuff with a program like HP tune.

Please do a build thread. I would love to see the process.

we have lots of you pull you pay type junkyards except out of all the junk yards I've been to in CO I've only found 3 f-bodys period.so I'm stuck with ebay and craigslist.

I know this is a stupid question for an engine I want to build up but what kind of gas mileage would I be able to get out of a lt1?

The U pull it yards have a lot of guys that look for parts that will sell on ebay. The f bodies get stripped clean pretty quick which is why I mentioned the Caprices and Buick wagons. They tend to get ignored. They don't all have Lt1s but it was an option and I think part of the tow packages. They have cast iron heads and a different CAM be the rest is the same.

The problem with the 4 Gens and MPG is weight. Stop and start driving is never going to be as good as a small car. I think the 3rd gens are 300-400 lbs lighter so it may be a little better. Now highway miles is a different story. My 4th gen cuts right through the air giving my 3800/5 spd 30+ MPG all day long. I am expecting my Lt1-6 speed to hit 28 MPG on the highway. The manual trans is a big player in the MPG game.

which buicks had the lt1? I haven't seen any caprices in the junk yards either. I'll be keeping an eye for the caprices though now.

I really don't think the 3rd gen is going to get any better mpg due to the fact its like a brick compared to the 4th gens aero wise. but being a stick is a must for me.

depending on conditions I'm getting 16-20mpg with 370 gears and auto trans.
