Would an ls-1 motor work in a 96 z? Would it take a new PC or other hardware? Direct bolt in and use existing hoses, switches and sensors?

You will need the entire wiring harness and ECU, also the radiator and all accesories. The swap can be done but honestly it might be cheaper/easier to just go buy an LS1 car. Unless you can get a deal the motor and trans will run at least $4-5000, and no the LT1 trans is not the same (at least the 6 speed, the 4l60E might bolt up not 100% on that)
